Who is Imam Shamil?
He is a symbol of Caucasian heroism and independence. The national hero and religious leader was born in 1797 in the town of Gimri with the name Ali. His family later changed his name to Shamil (which means "all-encompassing" in Arabic). By the 1830s, he began to take part in the wars against the Tsarist army.
In 1834, Shamil was declared Imam and for 25 years, he led the Dagestani and Chechen highlanders, fighting successfully against the Tsarist armies.
In 1840, Shamil finally declared himself the ruler of Chechnya and Dagestan and established an army, a tax system, legal laws, various state institutions, and administrative units.
The Imam's war lasted for almost 25 years. Throughout these 25 years, Shamil's name was on the lips of every Russian and Highlander, and during this time, he managed to resist all attempts to subjugate the Caucasus.
In the memory of his people, Imam Shamil remains a symbol of the nationalist movement of the North Caucasian highlanders, a wise leader, an intelligent diplomat, a skilled commander, a religious authority, and an outstanding statesman.
