Zelimkhan Gushmazukayev of Karachay was one of the last and most famous Chechen abreks of the pre-revolutionary era.
For over 13 years of resistance against Tsarist Russia, he became known as the “Governor of the Mountains.”
Born into a wealthy family, Zelimkhan was already a family man by 1901, with no thought of becoming an abrek.
However, a confrontation with rival families led to the death of his relatives, prompting him to take revenge.
He was tried for murder under the Russian Empire’s laws, but at the age of 27, he escaped and took up arms.
The Tsarist regime placed a large bounty on his head, which increased over the years.
Villages that sheltered him were fined or raided, yet none betrayed him.
Zelimkhan fought for justice, robbing the rich and distributing wealth to the poor.
In 1913, his hideout in the town of Shali was surrounded by soldiers.
After a fierce fight, he was shot dead at dawn on September 27.
Today, he is remembered as a Caucasian hero who fought for freedom and justice.
