Who is Abrek Zaur?
He was originally from the village of Kakadur in Ossetia. The young man was called up for military service and assigned to one of the regiments of the Terek Cossack Host in Pyatigorsk. Abrek Zaur, a freedom-loving man who accidentally killed an officer while defending a fellow mountaineer soldier, became an outlaw after this incident.
He repeatedly issued stern warnings to those who harmed the poor and defenseless. Zaur's mysterious adventures, secrecy, and elusiveness, his ability to pass through military outposts and borders unnoticed, and the sense of nobility and justice that nature had generously bestowed upon him, made people fond of him and earned him the love, support, and respect of everyone around him.
Abrek Zaur's name grew into legend, and his name was on the lips of his contemporaries, but very few significant written or material pieces of evidence about him have survived.
