He was originally from the village of Kakadur in Ossetia. The young man was called up for military service and assigned to one of the regiments of the Terek Cossack Army in Pyatigorsk. Abrek Zaur, a freedom-loving man who accidentally killed an officer while defending a mountain soldier, became an outlaw after this incident.
He repeatedly made frightening warnings to those who harmed the poor in need of protection. Zaur's mysterious adventures, his secrecy and elusiveness, his ability to pass military outposts and borders unnoticed, and the nobility and sense of justice that nature generously bestowed upon him, made people like him and ensured that he was loved by everyone around him, receiving their support and respect.
Abrek Zaur's name grew with legends, his name was on the lips of his contemporaries, but very few significant written or material evidences about him have survived.
